Local student-athlete Brooklin Smith, age 13 of Royse City, made the trip down to College Station, Texas on April 12 to compete in her first ever USAW sanctioned weightlifting meet. The 2nd Annual College Station Weightlifting Classic would set the stage for Brooklin to take all the training she has put in at her local CrossFit affiliate, CrossFit Rockwall, and qualify for a spot at the USA Weightlifting Youth National Championship, which will take place June 13-15 in Daytona, Florida.
Olympic-style weightlifting meets contest two lifts: the snatch and the clean and jerk. Each athlete receives three attempts at each lift and the heaviest successful attempts give the lifter a “total”, which ranks them in their respective weight classes. Brooklin competed in the womens 48 kg (105-pound) weight class. She successfully completed 6 out of 6 of her lifts with a 36 kg (79-pound) snatch and a 47 kg (104-pound) clean & jerk, totaling 83 kg (183-pounds).
No stranger to competition, Brooklin is involved in a variety of extra-curricular activities, with CrossFit and lifting being her favorites. “I really enjoyed competing in the Weightlifting Classic. It was a great experience and I cant wait for Nationals!” says Brooklin. As for her training, she confirms that, “since I started CrossFit and the Rockwall Weightlifting Club, I have become stronger than I have ever been.”
Coaches and athletes alike are taking notice of the benefits that come from this high intensity training known as CrossFit. As the sport continues to grow, so does interest in Olympic weightlifting. Michael Woodruff heads up the Rockwall Weightlifting Club at CrossFit Rockwall and tells us that, “Brooklin is a dedicated athlete. At only 13 years of age, she fits in with our adult CrossFit classes and she lifts alongside our best lifters in the Rockwall Weightlifting Club. She showed incredible composure going 6 for 6 in her very first USAW competition.”
