Disc Golf Tournament to Benefit Rockwall PAWS

February is not a month known for the biggest Disc Golf events because, in most places, temps are so low it keeps players huddled up next to the fire. Not so in Texas, where disc golf players enjoy the sport all year round. Which is why the Rockwall Disc Golf Association has created a charity tournament in the dead of winter called the “Not So Sub-zero Shootout."
Disc Golf is a relatively new sport that is growing very rapidly across the nation. It is played much like ball golf except the ball and cup have been replaced by highly specialized discs, much like Frisbees™, and targets that utilize chains and a basket catch the discs. Harry Myers Park, at 401 E Washington, has one of the top rated 18 hole courses in the state. The low cost, low impact, and casual feel make it a great activity for anyone at any age level. Also, the fact that most courses utilize natural terrain for its obstacles make it very low impact on the environment and maintain the “natural” flow of the landscape.
This year, the "Not So Sub-zero Shootout" event is scheduled for February 12, 2011 at Harry Myers Park and will benefit Rockwall PAWS, a non-profit organization that works closely with Rockwall County residents to help pay for the sometimes high costs of animal health care and spay/neuter surgeries. PAWS also works with Rockwall Animal Services to provide heartworm treatments and adoption awareness.
This year's tournament will have a festival-like atmosphere, with not only a Disc Golf Tournament but some pre-tournament activities that will include the whole community. Attendees will enjoy: a pet adoption drive, Frisbee dog demonstrations, bounce houses for kids, face painting, and vendor booths. The activities start at 10:00 am with the tournament to follow at 1:00 pm.
“This is an opportunity for the community to come out and see what Rockwall PAWS is doing to help the animals in our community and see what Disc Golf is all about at the same time. It’s a win for both groups,” said Mike Spracklen one of the leaders and organizers of the Rockwall Disc Golf Association. “We want the community see that we are not just about Disc Golf but also working to make this community better by partnering with groups like Rockwall PAWS.”
This event will have something for everyone, not just Disc Golfers, so come on out and show your support for our animal community and learn about a great sport your whole family can get involved in. At the same time, learn more about the new Rockwall Dog Park, to be completed by May 1, at Harry Myers Park!
