Rockwall--July 21, 2011 -- About 150 guests were on hand Wednesday evening as Freebirds World Burrito held a ribbon cutting, officially opening for business at their new Rockwall location. Mayor David Sweet, Helping Hands Director Margo Nielsen and Rockwall Area Habitat for Humanity Vice President Jim Beebe did the honors, clearing the way for guests to queue up for complimentary burritos made to order from scratch.
The company, started in Santa Barbara in 1987, has earned a reputation for supporting local charities in the locations they serve, and Rockwall is no exception. The day before Wednesday's event, the local Freebirds hosted fundraisers for Helping Hands and Habitat for Humanity, selling $5 burritos and donating the proceeds to the two organizations. Rockwall is the 51st Freebirds location to open, evidence of the enormous popularity the chain has garnered.
If one needed further evidence, a glance out front at the crowd camped out waiting for a chance at being one of the first 25 to enter at Thursday's opening should convince the toughest skeptic. The reward for these intrepid few is a year's worth of free burritos, a prize worth braving two days of 100-plus temperatures for the true fanatic.
