Jason Albright - Rockwall Fitness Freak

“Lean back...” “Three more reps...” “Almost there...” Familiar words to anyone who’s ever worked with a personal trainer. But, when you watch Jason Albright at work, you soon get a sense that this is not your ordinary, fresh out of 6-week certification, kind of trainer. What you’re seeing is one of today’s rarest commodities – someone who truly loves what he does for a living.
A closer look reveals that he's working with at least four different clients, each doing something different. If you think this would keep him from noticing you slacking off…well, you’d be wrong. “I’m constantly watching everybody." he says. "In fact, I was watching you, too. You put a little too much tricep in that lat pulldown.” And I’m not even a client. So much for divided attention.
Jason’s passion for physical fitness started early. From age ten on, there was hardly a sport out there that he didn’t embrace and master. After a knee injury in high school sidelined him, he needed to do a stint in rehab to regain its use. His nurse turned out to be a competitive women’s bodybuilder. “During the rehab process, my nurse taught me the right ways to train. I learned the importance of good nutrition, proper form and which exercises worked which muscle groups,” he explains. “I learned about the amazing physical transformation that the body can experience through training and nutrition.”
In 2003, another setback, in the form of a serious car accident, struck. Another 15-month period of recovery followed, in which he lost and regained nearly half his body weight. It was uncertain whether he would walk, let alone bodybuild, again. But bodybuild he has, winning Junior Heavyweight class at the Lee Haney tournamant in Louisiana in May, and currently training hard for the upcoming Red River in Oklahoma in October.
As remarkable as his recovery from both these tragedies was, Albright doesn’t care to dwell on them. “I am so past that stuff now. My gaze is forward, not backward. Each person I can help feel better and fitter is a new page in my book. I want to open peoples’ eyes about fitness and nutrition and there are a lot of people who haven’t gotten the message yet.”
Jason’s program is about as out-of-the-box as it gets. “You pay me for a three month program. I evaluate your fitness level, body fat, and attitude. I want to know what you eat and how much. Then we work together to improve on all these elements. I’m here every day, early in the morning, and late afternoon. You come when you want. I’ll be here to work you as hard as you want. You’ve already paid me, so you might as well make the commitment.”
“I don’t consider myself a trainer. I’m more of an educator. Fitness is more than big muscles. It’s also about nutrition and mental wellness. That’s where a lot of so-called ‘trainers’ come up short.”
Another insight into the mind and attitude of Jason Albright is in his website, www.theomgfreak.com, a name derived from a remark he overheard while out to dinner one evening, “Oh my god, that guy’s a freak!”
It says something about a guy’s mental wellness when he can proudly turn an insult into a trademark.
