Rockwall Animal Adoption Center Holds another Great Event!
The Rockwall Animal Adoption Center held an open house on Saturday to celebrate National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week. On hand were representatives of the Rockwall County Sheriff’s Posse, Rockwall Police K9 unit, and Mark-9 Search and Rescue from Dallas. The organizations gave demonstrations of their services and capabilities.

Mark-9, an all-volunteer Search and Rescue organization based in Dallas, provides the use of their own highly trained dogs to aid local fire and police agencies to find lost or missing people, or those in danger due to natural or man-made disasters. Dogs and their owners are certified in various aspects of the search and rescue process. Visitors were treated to an example of this training as a small girl was directed to hide in the nearby woods. Handler Max Kirk and his dog Mercy then set out to find her. The task was accomplished in short order, and the “victim” and search team walked out together to the applause of the audience.

Rockwall canine police officer Cesar showed his skills as he chased down a “perpetrator” and immobilized him until his handler could catch up and make the “arrest”.

Inside the adoption center visitors viewed the dogs and cats available for adoption, and staff was on duty to process any matches. There are many beautiful animals waiting for homes right now, so the public is invited to view some of them at Rockwall Animal Adoption Center. Better yet, visit the shelter and see them for yourself.
Writers, and pet rescue advocates, Barbara Savage and Jaynie Lamb, introduced Pam Uhers new book Pets Across America: Volume 2. A portion of the book sales at the event went to the Rockwall Animal Shelter. The new book is a collection of short stories written by people who have had their lives touched by animals. Pams request for story submissions on Craigs List brought hundreds of responses. Pets Across America 2 is a compilation of heart warming, moving and inspirational stories drawn from those submissions. Pam Uher is the owner and founder of Gabriels Pet Care in Rowlett, Texas.
In 1996, The Humane Society of the U.S. launched National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week. This campaign was designed to acknowledge and promote the invaluable role shelters play in their communities and to increase public awareness of animal welfare issues and shelter services. During National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week, the first full week of every November, The HSUS promotes and celebrates animal shelters across the country through media and public outreach.
