Rockwall Summer Musicals presents:
Based on the lauded Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical, this film follows the romance of Billy Bigelow, a charming carousel barker, and Julie Jordan, a pretty worker from a nearby mill. When the attractive young couple gets married, they also both find themselves unemployed, which puts a strain on their relationship. When Billy finds out that Julie is pregnant, he resorts to extreme measures to get money, a decision that leads to tragedy.
“Carousel” is based on the play “Liliom” by the Hungarian playwright Ferenc Molnar. In the adaptation the action takes place in the mid-19th century in a coastal village in Maine, and it deals with crime and redemption. It has given us the great songs, such riches as “If I Loved You,” “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over,” “A Real Nice Clambake,” “What’s the Use of Wondrin’” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone”… and one of the most searingly emotional songs ever written for the Broadway stage, Billy’s “Soliloquy.”
