Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States. It is played in countries around the world, and it has recently taken root right here in our Rockwall community!
Pickleball enthusiasts from Rockwall and surrounding areas gather locally at the gym of the Boys & Girls Club (BGC) of Rockwall County three days a week. On those days, players enjoy the friendly, athletic competition offered by Pickleball.
Pickleball is a little bit like tennis – it is played on a court, but the court is smaller and the net is lower. It is a little bit like ping pong — it is played with a hard paddle, but the paddle is bigger. The ball is similar to a whiffle ball – but with a unique design just for Pickleball.
The sport is a family-friendly activity that individuals of all ages and athletic abilities, from pre-teens to seniors, can enjoy. It is easy for beginners to learn, but it can develop into a quick, fast-paced, competitive game for experienced players. Whatever your age or ability level, get a paddle in your hands, step onto a court, and you will be playing in no time. And you will be hooked!
See what the sport looks like and what one novice player has to say about it in this video from the USA Pickleball Association.
Rockwall resident, John Roe, has been instrumental in introducing Pickleball to area residents and in forming a mutually beneficial player partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Rockwall County. On a pay-as-you play honor system basis, players donate $3 for each session of play. Donations are used by the Boys & Girls Club to fund activities for the children it serves.
Pickleball players in Rockwall are a welcoming group of area residents who enjoy introducing new players to their sport. Join them on any Monday, Wednesday, or Friday, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m., at the Boys & Girls Club gym located at 901 E. Interurban in the Dobbs Annex Building. Equipment is provided for first-timers!
