Walk The Bridge!
On the third Sunday of each month, join us at 15:00 on “Heroes Bridge” (Hwy 66) between Rowlett & Rockwall as we Walk The Bridge to raise awareness about the epidemic of First Responder and Veteran Suicide, seek to provide Mental Health Wellness solutions and alternatives to suicide, and Honor Service!
This monthly event was organized to bring attention to the general population, of the tragic loss of life by suicide, of our nation’s pride, our veterans and first responders.
In fact, and according to the Veteran’s Administration, in 2020, there were 6,146 Veteran suicides. This was an average of 16.8 per day! Despite the increased attention to the treatment given to veterans of mental health by the Veteran’s Administration, suicide was the 13th leading cause of death among armed forces veterans overall, and it was the second leading cause of death among veterans under age 45. Furthermore, according to researchers in, 2020, 116 police officers died by suicide and 113 died in the line of duty. Meanwhile, there were 127 suicides reported among firefighters and EMTs in 2020, slightly higher than the 126 confirmed in 2017.
In addition to veterans and first responders, Walk-the-Bridge is largely attended by families of survivors and concerned citizens of our surrounding communities. All are most welcome to participate. Tragic stories by survivors and families are shared during this event but, we also gather to celebrate the sacrifices and lives of our nation’s pride, our nation’s heroic veterans and first responders.
Third Watch LE MC, along with our Partners The Veteran’s Resource and Outreach Committee, Lake Ray Hubbard Detachment of the Marine Corps League, Disabled American Veterans (D.A.V.) Post 137, and Make it Happen committed to walking a symbolic 22 Miles once each month. The purpose of the walk is to draw attention to the approximately 22 Plus Veterans and Public Servants who take their own lives each and every day and then, once we’ve gotten the attention of our elected officials and leaders in charge, DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! These events take slightly over an hour to complete.
We challenge the civic and political leaders of Rowlett & Rockwall and First Responder’s join us. Let’s lead the way in finding solutions to this tragic situation!
